In Modern Courtyard, post-industrial materials are paired with iconic Canadian red maple trees, picking up on forward design trends celebrating the local and regional. Positioned within a frame/box of weathered steel, the maples have a cooling effect as a privacy screen and filter for direct sun.

The design for the Modern Courtyard’s front property is echoed in the back property but with the red maples planted in a more organic configuration — the effect is “unboxed”, with the frame now expanded to the fenced rectangle defining the properties’ boundaries. As a contrast to the more organically placed elements in the space, the garage, sheathed in large stainless steel panels accented with industrial bolts, provides a sleek clean backdrop.
